Staying Healthy, One Crab at a Time

If you’ve been on the prowl for restaurants that offer the best seafood around Monterey, you may have been cued in on the few spots that serve that ultimate seafood piece de resistance: the Alaskan Red King Crab. Seafood is often a top choice of those who want to stick to a healthy diet and are looking for alternatives to red meat, but do red king crabs fit that bill? Here are some facts worth thinking about next time you’re holding that cracking tool:

Calories

King crabs are exceptionally low in calories.  For instance, one king crab leg weighing 6.1 oz. contains about 144 calories, more than half of which are from protein. A single 3 oz. serving only brings up 71 calories. A good walk around Old Fisherman’s Wharf can help burn those unwanted calories.

Stronger Bones

A modest serving of king crab may work towards bulking up your bones. A 3.5-ounce serving contains seven milligrams of zinc, which aids in bone mass reinforcement and strengthening the immune system against respiratory infections.

Sodium Defenses

Seafood will have a sizeable amount of sodium. Three ounces of Alaskan red king crab meat have around 700 to 900 milligrams, which may constitute nearly half the recommended sodium allowance for the day. Try replacing salt with pepper and herbs in seasoning the meat.
